Building bridges between nature and culture – establishing a crossborder network

In 2019 the scope of the ’ Danube Nature Guides’ project was extended to a new target group, as biologists, nature park staff and school teachers motivated to offer their pupils outdoor teaching lessons in nature parks.

Despite the worldwide Coronapandemic we were able to organize the kick-off meeting in August 2019 in Tulcea –Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve with the presence of 23  project participants from the two neighbouring countries Romania and Moldova, covering 4 regions and 3 nature parks. The objective of the 3-day meeting was to identify and select the proper methods and techniques to be used for each Natural Park in order to understand and communicate the importance of the aquatic ecosystems. Considering the special conditions, we were happy to be supported by ANTREC (National Association for Rural, Ecological and Cultural Tourism) in the organization of the meetings activities and of the field trip to the Danube delta.

Outcomes of the meeting: The result was that further training and suitable pedagogical materials on the ecology of the Danube and its landscape structure represent the greatest need for park staff and teachers in order to be able to perform their tasks in a higher quality.

Out of our group, which will be the first group for further trainings and crossborder network, we built up two main focus: 1. more advanced trainings will lead them to better educational programms for their audience (mainly scholars), and 2. thematic excursions fitting for each of the parks will give them material to fulfill their tasks and challenges for future groups and future optimized topics as there are loss of biodiversity, ecosystem services and river continuum.
